What is a concussion?

A concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury, can affect how your brain functions on a temporary basis. There does not need to be a loss of consciousness for someone to sustain a concussion.

A concussion may be caused by a hit to the head, neck, face, or body, causing your brain to move inside your skull. This can cause short-term chemical changes within your brain, &, like any other injury, will need time to heal.

Due to these chemical changes, you may experience a range of symptoms, which can vary from person to person. Symptoms of concussion may not appear for hours, days, or until you are challenged (physically or mentally) following your accident.

If you experience a brain injury or concussion, it's important to seek medical attention as soon as you can.

Things you can do to help manage your post-concussion symptoms photo
- Keep a set routine each day, balance rest with activity.
- Avoid anything that stimulates your brain too much – screens, loud music, noisy environments.
- Do not drink alcohol or take non-prescription drugs.
- Drink lots of water.
- Engage in regular light exercise such as walking.
- Share with your family/whanau and friends what is happening for you and ask for support.
- They may also need to get some support to understand and help you with your recovery.

Returning to work/study and sport

It takes time for your brain to heal. Your GP and concussion team will help to support your return to work/study and sport.

The effects of repeated concussion build up. If you get a second injury before the first one has healed properly, you can end up with a more serious injury.
